Weber State track: Jordan Cross fails to advance at NCAA championship meet

Wednesday , June 06, 2018 - 8:28 PM

The Weber State track career of Jordan Cross came to an end Wednesday.

The Ogden High alumnus raced in a semifinal heat for the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

A total of 24 runners competed for 12 spots in Friday’s championship final. In the second heat, Cross ran 9:00.82 to finish 10th in his heat and 20th overall, failing to advance.

His time was 19 seconds off the season best he ran two weeks ago at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, where he clocked an 8:41.72. While each race’s pace is slightly different, that time would have advanced him to the final at fourth in his heat.

Cross was the only Weber State athlete at the national championship meet.

The steeplechase is a seven-plus lap distance race that involves four fixed-barrier hurdles, one of which jumps into a small pool of water.

BYU sophomore Clayson Shumway finished second overall and advanced to the final. BYU freshman Matt Owens also advanced. Utah State’s Spencer Fehlberg finished 15th.
